At 57.5%, Gingerbread Still The Top Android OS; Jelly Bean Climbs To 1.2%:
New data on the state of the Android ecosystem has been posted to Google’s Android Developers site. The big reveal? Gingerbread, the version of the Android mobile operating system released back in December 2010, is still leading with 57.5% of Android OS share. Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is at 20.9%, and Android 2.2 (Froyo) has 14%. Yes, Froyo – released in May 2010. And as for the newest version of Android, aka Jelly Bean (Android 4.1)? It’s now installed on 1.2% of Android devices, up from 0.8% a month ago.
Since Google only revealed Jelly Bean in late June, promising rollouts to Nexus handsets and the Motorola Xoom in mid-July, the number of Jelly Bean devices can also help paint a picture of new Android device sales, and perhaps most importantly the early traction the Jelly Bean-based Nexus 7 tablet is seeing. (Maybe that’s why Google opted for the giant Google.com homepage ad?)

Also, despite the new device announcements at Motorola’s press event yesterday, Jelly Bean’s traction doesn’t look to immediately improve. Even though Google completed the acquisition of the handset maker Motorola Mobility earlier this year, Motorola’s new phones (the Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR MAXX HD and Droid RAZR M) aren’t shipping with Jelly Bean. This news, of course, comes with a sigh of relief from competing OEMs who feared that Motorola would be given an unfair advantage now that it’s Google-owned in terms of getting the latest OS ahead of the pack. Nope.
Instead, Motorola promised that it would attempt to upgrade both new and existing handsets to Jelly Bean soon. But it also went a step further - promising a $100 credit if it failed to do so after consumers purchased one of its newest Android phones. (More details on that here.)
To be fair, Jelly Bean’s small install base isn’t a great reflection of consumer demand for Android devices. Because Android updates are in the hands of OEMs and carriers, users can’t follow the upgrade path to newer software releases the way that Apple iOS device owners can simply download updates over-the-air or via iTunes. But that also makes things challenging for the Android developer community, which has to deal with different screen sizes, device types, and API versions, in addition to variations in Android OS versions. Plus, we should note that the fallout from Apple’s landmark court win against Samsung has yet to really come into play, either. Will Google begin to workaround the infringement issues by redesigning parts of Android to work differently? And, if so, how will that impact the Android fragmentation problem even further? It’s too soon to tell, but the issue of Android OS fragmentation at least, doesn’t look to be getting any better with the release of Google branded tablets and the Motorola buyout.

Chromebook, sus aplicaciones y uso

Ya tengo mas de dos meses con la Chromebook y sinceramente estoy super contento. De hecho anteriormente no tenia una notebook ni una netbook solo tenia la Motorola Xoom desde donde podia hacer varias cosas pero no todo. Por eso decidi comprar la Samsung Chromebook que no me a decepcionado hasta el momento. De hecho este post lo estoy escribiendo desde ella y en un tren.

Bueno para ir al grano, Chromebook es un excelente dispositivo para llevarlo donde uno desee.

Dentro de las aplicaciones que uso estan:

• IM+ donde tengo como usar los mensajeros de Yahoo, MSN, Google Talk, Skype, AIM, Facebook, Jabber, ICQ, MySpace y Skype. Solo mencionarles que es una App pero este app no tiene el soporte para video conferencia.

• Google Talk Launcher: El chat oficial de Google donde asi mismo es una App y se activa con la cuenta que haces loggin al inicio. Con este app podras chatear, hacer llamada y video tambien. Asi mismo dentro de este app si tienes cuenta de Google+ podras recivir invitaciones de Hangout si te invitan.

• Picnik: Un excelente servicio para poder editar fotos, recortar las fotos, poner algunos efectos,y mas. Chromebook como tiene un disco duro interno 16GB SSD (mSATA) donde te permite almacenar ciertos files antes de subirlos a la nube o simplemente con el lector de memorias que viene incorporado, conectas la memoria y subes directamente las fotos a Picasa para luego editarlas con Picnik.
• Google Docs: Como todos ya saben es un servicio en la nube que nos proporciona Google. De lo cual no soy un buen usuario de Documentos ni hojas de Excel pero si uso el servicio cuando tengo que abrir ciertos archivos que me envian por email y simplemente los edito o los abro con Google Docs.
• WebCam Toy: Es una App que te permite tomar fotos desde tu camara web de la Chromebook. Asi mismo tiene varios efectos como, Left n Right Mirror, Top n Bottom Mirror, Split Mirror, up-side Down, Shuffle, Ghost, etc. Muy bueno para poner fotos de profile en este Halloween.

• Chrome OS: El OS en general funciona casi el 100% con app y servicios online, en la nube. Las chromebooks vienen siempre con el OS en la version Stable pero tu puedes cambiar a las version Beta o Developer. Claro esta que las dos ultimas versiones siempre tiene ciertas cosas que no te van a funcionar por que son versiones de testeo.
• Hardware: Esta preciosura tiene dos puertos usb, puerto para conectar parlantes o auriculares, puerto HDMI, un adaptador para conectar sea un monitor adicional o a la TV modernas, teclas con caracteristicas de subir o bajar la iluminacion de la pantalla, de la misma manera del volumen, refrescar, expander la pantalla a full screen. La Webcam con HD que la eh usado para los hangout dentro de Google+ y las video conferencias con Google Talk, microfono, Bateria que tranquilamente te dura un dia entero de trabajo sin necesidad de cargador.
• Internet: Dentro de las seria de Samsung tienes dos opciones que es la solo Wifi o 3G y Wifi. Yo tengo la segunda opcion donde 3G agarro 100MB mensuales gratis durante dos anios de Verizon Wireles, que sinceramente no es mucho 100MB pero sirve para salvar de apuros para un email o chat o cosas asi. El Wifi es muy buena recepcion a largas distancias pero eso tambien depende de varias condiciones.

En general es una maquina que si estas acostumbrado a trabajar mucho con la web, esta Chromebook es 100%, pero si usas programas como de disenio grafico que necesitas instalar, programas pre-diseniados para tu empresa y cosas asi, esta no es una buena opcion.
